What is self talk? It's the way your inner dialogue makes the sense to the world around you and the way you communicate with the inner self.
Negative self-talk can hugely affect you because our thought processes affect our feelings and we display this in our behaviors. This leads to negative behavior like isolation, lack of motivation and withdrawing from engaging in activities that bring happiness.
If you are someone who consistently makes mean comments to yourself like you're stupid or I'm too fat "you may be creating a lot of unnecessary anxiety and stress to yourself.
Patterns of negative and positive self-talk start from childhood. This habit can be conditioned in us for many years, and can affect us in many ways, thus influencing the experience of stress in our lives.
Each of us has a number of messages that play over our minds each day, unfortunately, too often the pattern we develop is mostly negative. We are living in a difficult season that has been invaded by the COVID 19 that has claimed many lives and has robbed many people of a decent livelihood.
Based on this current COVID 19 crisis we must be very intentionally on our thought processes and more than ever, now is the time to embrace positive self-talk amidst this crisis.
If someone learned as a child that they would never amount to anything, by the negative words spoken to them by their parents, teachers and siblings those utterances; have a huge negative influence in adulthood if not checked.
Throughout the years these thoughts may have been playing over and over our minds fueling the feelings of anger, fear, guilt and hopelessness.
Here are some steps you can apply to correct the negative self-talk to boost your mind and relieve yourself from unnecessary anxiety and stress:-
Notice Your Patterns
The first change towards change is to be aware of the problem. You cannot confront that which you are not aware of. Study your thought processes intentionally, you probably don't realize how you say negative things in your head.
Journal Writing
Journaling is an effective tool for examining your behavior for your inner processes. You can start by writing down your feelings and thoughts on a daily or weekly basis. You can later analyze the content and take some necessary steps to curb negative patterns that you pick out.
Dissociate with Negative People
We all experience down days, but for some people, it is a lifestyle so it's good to distance yourself from such people. Attitudes of people you spend a lot of time with have an effect on your attitude as well; so if you identify such people around you it could be time to distance yourself from them.
Keep negativity at minimum levels by keeping people who are optimistic around yourself.
Practice Thanksgiving
Finding things that you are grateful for in life daily helps improve your attitude, and helps in promoting a positive self-talk. One great way to do this by starting a gratitude journal where you write all the things you are grateful for each day.
The expression of your gratitude in a journal makes these experiences and emotions more tangible. You can start by appreciating even small things as having water to drink and having loving caring friends and family around you.
Don't Fear Failure
The road to success is usually that of multiple failures. The fear of failure holds many people from ever trying to venture into the unknown. Most of the success stories are of people who failed multiple times before becoming successful.
Success is not final, failure is not fatal: it is the courage to continue that counts
Winston Churchill.....
Believe in Success
Believing in yourself is key, doubting yourself holds you back from trying and thus from succeeding. Believe in yourself even if it takes multiple tries. Believe in the abilities and skills that you have to propel success.
You need to tell yourself that you can succeed in what you desire if you put your mind to it. if you don't who will?
Replace Negative words to Positive Ones
We naturally tend towards being negative, and providing ourselves all the time with positive thoughts can be a challenge. For example, if you have a tendency of complaining of the current COVID 19 crisis you will get anxious and stress over a situation that is beyond your control.
If you can change your thoughts and self-talk you can view this season as an opportunity of learning and bonding with family and friends. Focus on the positive aspect of the COVID Pandemic actually, for some people great opportunities for innovations have presented!
Be positive when negative thoughts creep into your mind. Doing so will help you find the motivation to trying again in the future.
In Conclusion
What are your desires in life? What do you want out of life? where do you see yourself 5 to 10 years from now?
Allow yourself to dream big by setting small goals before getting to those bigger ones.
Don't give up remain positive, respect and appreciate yourself by inviting a rich self-talk.
Yes, you can do it!
